PM Modi held talks with PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Prime Minister of Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc on the sidelines of India-ASEAN and East Asia Summit 2019 at Bangkok on 4 November 2019. Highlights: ♦ The two leaders reaffirmed the traditional and historical friendly relations between the two countries. ♦ They also discussed the recent high-level exchanges in both the countries that have resulted in robust cooperation in areas like the expansion of defence and security ties, forging of closer economic and commercial linkages, and deepening of people-to-people engagement. ♦ The leaders agreed to work together in defence and security fields, maritime domain. The leaders aimed to promote peace, prosperity, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.  They agreed to work together to tackle terrorism. ♦ The countries are committed to the maintenance of a rules-based order to respect international law like  the UN Convention on the Law of Sea (UNCLOS). It is expected that it will promote the independence of navigation, overflight, and rules-based trade in the South China Sea. ♦ India is to be the Chairman of ASEAN for 2020. PM Modi announced India’s readiness to work closely with Vietnam during its tenure as a non-permanent member of UNSC for 2020-2021. India-Vietnam: India and Vietnam relations have been built on a foundation of cultural and civilizational links. The relationship is marked by mutual trust and understanding and strengthen cooperation in regional and international fora.
